HOW TO: NEGOTIATE YOUR MEDICAL & HOSPITAL BILLS

@dr.dan_dpt

You can literally negotiate tens of thousands of dollars off of a hospital bill when done correctly. It’s BS that it’s done this way but it’s important to know how to make it affordable. #surgeryrecovery

Ask for itemized receipt that you can check to make sure it is correct. Sometime there are errors and overcharges that you can get taken off.

From there you can go to services like Healthcare Bluebook to see what certain medical procedures should cost. This is often much less than what you’ve been charged.

The key is to be nice and persistent.  The hospital is already prepared to sell your unpaid bill to collection agencies for pennies on the dollar anyway, so use that information so you can pay it yourself and don’t have to take that credit score hit.

  1. Apply for charity Care
  2. Ask for itemized bill – with a description for each service they were paid for.
  3. Check for errors.  80% of all hospital bills have errors.  Make a note next to errors and dispute with hospital
  4. Check for fair price using  fairhealthconsumer.org, – look up the fair price, turquoise.health – look up your hospital’s cash price. Take the lowest price from these two websites and offer to pay that amount.
  5. Ask to speak with the managers, directors and show them your search
  6. Document every conversation you had with the hospital.
  7. CC all your emails to the executives.  Rocketreach.co to find the emails for hospital execs.
  8. Paid in full discount.  If I pay you off completely today, what is the lowest you will take to pay off my account. They will give you an offer.  If not a good offer, go through the above steps.
