California expands Medicaid to all eligible undocumented individuals

Starting Jan. 1, California will become the first state to offer Medicaid coverage to all eligible undocumented individuals, Cal Matters reported Dec. 28.
 
The state’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, first expanded coverage to undocumented children in 2015 and to individuals over 50 in 2022. The final expansion for individuals ages 26 to 49 will provide an additional 700,000 people with health coverage, though about 500,000 undocumented immigrants in the state will remain ineligible because they make too much money to qualify.
 
The California Legislature previously committed more than $4 billion to the Medi-Cal expansion annually.
