Call the AMA to Demand Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya's Release
Call the AMA Media Relations Office: (312) 464-4430
Demand that the American Medical Association issue an immediate public statement calling for the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the Palestinian pediatrician who has been detained by Israel since December 2024 and who, according to his lawyer and multiple human rights organizations, has been tortured while imprisoned.
The AMA has spoken publicly on international humanitarian crises before, including supporting humanitarian and medical aid for Ukraine. It must show the same commitment to defending a physician who has been imprisoned and abused.
The AMA’s Office of International Relations states that it works to “support practicing physicians and their patients” through international advocacy.
International humanitarian law requires that medical personnel be respected and protected during armed conflict, and the United Nations has called for Dr. Abu Safiya’s immediate release amid grave concerns about his treatment.
Suggested message: “I’m calling to urge the American Medical Association to issue a public statement demanding the immediate release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. The AMA has spoken out on behalf of physicians and humanitarian principles before. I ask that the AMA do so again by calling for Dr. Abu Safiya’s release and reaffirming that physicians and other health care workers must be protected under international law.”
