What:
Mayor Karen Bass is preparing the City’s fiscal year 2026-2027 budget proposal, which she will deliver to City Council on April 20, 2026. The people of Los Angeles (LA) must hold our elected officials answerable, beginning with spending priorities. The urgency is clear. The 2025 fires in Southern California proved to be catastrophic, producing devastating harm and loss that require long-term rebuilding and recovery for many Angelenos and neighboring communities. The ensuing ICE raids and military occupation of LA coincided with a drastic 70% increase in LAPD shootings, since 2024, causing irreparable harm to many Angelenos. Continuously, Angelenos face the daily onslaught of economic inequality, housing insecurity and displacement, ecological disaster, law enforcement violence, and public health crises–just to name a few of the acute conditions of injustice that demand the City’s urgent attention and long-term investment. We must do something to change this!
Participatory budgeting is a necessary process that centers the voices of everyday Angelenos to drive LA City’s spending priorities. We want to hear from you. We believe that LA City officials need to hear from you! How do you think Mayor Bass should allocate the City’s 14.1 billion budget? What are your spending priorities? Did you know, for example, that LAPD police chief Jim McDonnell is one of the highest paid chiefs of police in the nation with a base salary of $450,000 per year? Did you know that every year, LAPD leads the City as the top department responsible for causing harm that leads to the City’s highest liability payouts? Did you know that Mayor Bass has urged City Council to find an additional $4.4 million to hire more police when LAPD already receives nearly half (46%) of the City’s discretionary funds, which the City can use for any purpose? What else should the City do with 14.1 billion dollars?
Make your voice heard! Tell Mayor Bass to budget your priorities. Take the People’s Budget LA survey, which includes existing and proposed spending categories. The survey takes about fifteen minutes to complete. Let’s build a people’s vision and budget for LA together!
