4 MEDICAL BILL MYTHS

  1. Requesting an itemized bill will automatically decrease your total

    FALSE
Sometimes it will drop b/c they may catch some errors.  But not always the case.

  2. Medical Bills don’t affect your credit

    FALSE
They cannot be reported to credit bureau until one year after your first bill. After that it can be reported, but if you go back and pay that debt most credit agencies will then wipe that off your credit report.
That being said..The 3 main credit bureaus:
    Transunion
    Experion
    Equifax
So they no longer factor in any medical debt under $500 onto your credit report at all.

  1. Hospitals have to accept whatever amount of money you want to pay themFALSE

Hospitals get to decide what the payment will be, state may have some regulations on what the hospital can charge, but the individual does not get to set those terms.

  2. Only really poor people qualify for assistance

    FALSE
They are tiered by income.  You can qualify for an 80, 60 or 50% discount.
