Mayor Karen Bass is preparing the City’s fiscal year 2025-2026 budget proposal, which is due to City Council on April 20, 2025. The people of Los Angeles (LA) must hold elected officials answerable, beginning with spending priorities. The urgency is clear. The 2025 SoCal fires, which prove to be among the nation’s largest metropolitan firestorms in history, continue to produce heartbreaking devastation and staggering loss for Angelenos and neighboring communities. As ever-strengthening windstorms persisted and deaths tolls have risen, Angelenos continue to endure mass displacement, catastrophic loss, ecological disaster, and public health crises–to name a few of the acute conditions that demand immediate attention and require long-term investments and care. Meanwhile, the City’s budget deficit is widening; and, the injustices that everyday Angelenos were experiencing before the fires are worsening as the days pass. We must do something to change this!
Participatory budgeting is a necessary process to center the voices of everyday Angelenos to drive LA City’s spending priorities. We want to hear from you. We believe that LA City officials need to hear from you! How do you think Mayor Bass should allocate the City budget? What are your spending priorities? How should we invest in and rebuild LA? Did you know, for example, that the newly-appointed police chief, Jim McDonnell, is now one of the highest paid chiefs of police in the nation with a base salary of $450,000 per year? Did you know that LAPD receives $3.4 billion of the City’s $12.8 billion general fund? LAPD also leads the City as the top department responsible for causing harm that leads to the highest liability payouts every single year. At a time of multiple city-wide crises and record budget deficits, LAPD also receives nearly half (45.6%) of the City’s discretionary funds, which the City can use for any purpose. What else should the City do with 3.1 billion dollars?
Make your voice heard! Tell Mayor Bass to budget your priorities. Take the People’s Budget LA survey, which includes existing and proposed spending categories. The survey takes about fifteen minutes to complete. Let’s build a people’s vision for LA together!
